FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In its second year, the JapanTown festival will bring three NYC neighborhoods a taste of Japan

NEW YORK, New York (May 17, 2010) — The NYC Japan Street Fair is back by popular demand with a new name: JapanTown! Celebrating all things Japanese, this year's JapanTown will be comprised of three festivals held on separate days in different neighborhoods of New York. The three festivals will focus on Japanese "cool" culture, soul food, and healthy food, respectively. Hosting community festivals filled with Japanese food, products, performances, and other cultural exhibits not commonly found in New York, JapanTown aims to promote a deeper understanding of the rich culture of Japan among all New Yorkers.

Starting off JapanTown on July 17th, 2010 is the Cool Japan festival in the East Village, NYC's unofficial "Japan Town" with more than 100 Japanese restaurants and businesses. The JapanTown Cool Japan festival highlights what's new and exciting in Japanese culture, including the latest in street fashion, anime, J-pop, and food. The second festival is the JapanTown Soul Food festival on August 22nd in Midtown. This festival is similar to last year's with food and performances but emphasizes more Japanese soul food—the dishes and cooking styles unique to specific regions of Japan. The Healthy Food festival on September 26th in the Upper East Side enlightens visitors about the countless healthy Japanese ingredients available and features demonstrations on how to use them for a healthy diet. A section devoted to soybean products is one of the key attractions for this event. It is estimated that a total of 200,000 visitors are to visit the three JapanTown festivals.

JapanTown began in 2009 to familiarize New York with Japanese culture and to provide Japanese businesses—from small shops to national brands—a market to introduce their distinct products. The 2009 festival was enormously successful, with an estimated 80,000 visitors browsing the wares of 30 vendors, which sold a massive quantity of food and items as well as distributed 6000 to 10,000 product samples within six hours and 450 food samples within four hours. The event was covered by major local media as well as the Japanese media.
